In the world of educational publishing, durability matters. From high-use reference books to daily textbooks, the binding method determines how well a book will hold up semester after semester. At Bradford & Bigelow, our case binding delivers the strength, reliability, and consistency educational publishers need.
Case binding, often called hardcover binding, is a process where book pages are sewn or glued together in sections, then attached to a rigid cover made from sturdy board wrapped in a printed sheet. This construction protects the pages, keeps the spine strong, and withstands heavy handling over time.
We offer case binding in different configurations, depending on the book’s intended use and feel in the reader’s hands:
Flatback books have a squared-off spine, ideal for most textbooks and reference materials. | Roundback books have a slightly curved spine, often chosen for thicker volumes to help them open more easily. |
Tightback means the book block (pages) is glued directly to the spine of the case, giving a firm, rigid feel. | Loose back has a small gap between the book block and case spine, allowing the cover to flex slightly when opened. |
|
These are small, decorative bands placed at the top (headband) and bottom (footband) of the spine. While they add a traditional finishing touch, they also help protect the spine ends during handling and shelving—important for books that are in and out of backpacks and library stacks all year long.
